Tuli Block Magic

Tuli Block Magic

The Tuli block is a narrow fringe of land in the south-eastern corner of Botswana, wedged between Zimbabwe in the north and east and South Africa in the south. Tuli’s distinctive border is a result of historical acquisition by the British South Africa Company (BSAC) and subsequent land sales to private farmers. The BSAC sought to create a buffer zone against Boer incursions from South Africa and to facilitate a railway route to Rhodesia by Cecil John Rhodes. The terrain proved wholly unsuitable, and the BSAC eventually sold the land to private farmers.

The Tuli Block discerns itself from the rest of Botswana due its extraordinary rocky outcrop known as the Hardeveld as well as the red sand and ancient, massive trees unique to the area. It is a superlative safari destination known for its incredible abundance of elephants, lions, leopards, cheetah and antelope and over 350 bird species, including the rare Pel’s fishing owl. This area comprises privately owned farmland and conservancies making it exclusive, low-impact tourism, with Mashatu Game Reserve one of the largest privately owned game reserves in southern Africa. Tuli Block also boasts some of the world’s oldest geological formations dating back 3,7 billion years, with Solomon’s Wall – a 30-meter-high basalt cliff along the Motloutse River. Archeologically rich, Tuli Block also boasts traces of San people rock painting.

Hidden deep in the sacred Tswapong Hills, is where one will find Moremi Gorge, characterised by its series of crystal-clear pools, giant ferns and sweet, pure water. One of the most exceptional features of the area is the ‘goat dogs’ of Molalatu, north of Tuli Block. The villagers belonging to the Zionist Christian Church devised a brilliant livestock preservation method. When the puppies are young, they foster them out to lactating goats that treat them as their own. The pups grow up thinking of themselves as goats while preserving their canine instincts, while instinctively guarding and protecting the goatherd from predators!

Situated within the boundaries of Mashatu Game Reserve is Limpopo Valley Airfield which simplifies travelling for guests flying directly to the area. One can clear customs and once passports are stamped, guests can truly relax and enjoy the magnificence of the area.

A truly sacred safari experience, the “land of Giants” is a unique blend of ancient trees, abundant wildlife, geological formations and cultural and historically unique, underscoring its importance to the local communities. It is truly captivating and distinctive, giving the visitor an authentic experience that only Africa can offer!
